Aqua Sphere is There as Julie Bradshaw Sets World Butterfly Record

UK Press Release - July, 2011

Julie "Madfish" Bradshaw sets world record distance butterfly swim

Dr. Julie ‘Madfish’ Bradshaw, MBE, of Great Britain, has achieved a world first - swimming 28.5 miles around Manhattan Island doing butterfly, taking her tally of world records to an amazing 20. Bradshaw finished in a record time of 9 hrs 28 minutes and 37 seconds.

Commenting after the race on 16th July she said, "It was a gorgeous day - the hottest swim I've ever done - 76F/24C in the water - and I used sunscreen instead of grease! At one point I thought I was going to dehydrate. I was ahead of all the checkpoints until I hit the Hudson River - the home straight - when the weather blew up. It was horrendously rough. It was one of the toughest swims I've ever done. Thank goodness for my Aqua Sphere swimwear and Seal mask. Essential kit! Clear comfortable vision for the entire swim and swimwear that doesn’t ride up. Hardly any rub marks from the suit or eyewear. When you consider the distance and swim conditions, that's amazing."

Bradshaw flew into the Guinness Book of World Records when she swam butterfly across the English Channel in 2002 in a time of 14 hours 18 minutes, smashing nine hours off the previous record held by a Canadian. And she still holds the junior record for crossing the Channel when she was just 15.

Bradshaw, also known as 'Lady of the Lakes' for the records she holds swimming in the Lake District, received an MBE for services to swimming in 2006. She was presented with an honorary doctorate by Loughborough University the same year. The following year she was inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA.

Bradshaw started the Manhattan swim at 0830 New York time (1330 BST) today (Saturday 16th July) and finished just before 6pm New York time, 2300 BST.
